When we think of Windows Mobile apps or check the online reviews of the Best Pocket PC Application we usually come across the same old stuff like Google Maps, Skype, Facebook App, SkyFire, Opera etc. Dont get me wrong these apps are great but there are other hidden gems that are usually overlooked and today we take a look at a few of them in no particular order.

1 ) CleanRAM [in English] : This nifty little application releases valuable program memory that’s no longer being used without having to restart the device. There are 3 levels (Basic purge, Quality purge, Fundamental purge) to perform RAM cleanup.

2 ) S2U2 : is a simple lock/unlock application which has the iPhone style slide unlocking. It can be used as a screensaver while you don’t use your device. It will also shows your calender appointments, missed calls, unread SMS/email etc.

3 ) SmartLyrics : lets you manually search for the lyrics to any song, it can also automatically pull the lyrics for the song you play on windows mobile using Windows Mobile Media Player or in HTC AudioManager. Requires registration.

4 ) YoMoMedia RSS : If you read RSS on your device then this is a must have. This app comes in 2 parts – a web application and a Windows Mobile RSS Client. The best part about it is it syncs the feeds between these 2 apps.

5 ) w0lf’s Translator : uses the Google Translate engine to provide translations right on your mobile device. It also has Auto-detect feature to know the input language.

6 ) Microfi Nitrogen : is an opensource Windows Mobile app that allows you to play MP3/OGG/AAC/MP4/M4A/3GP/WAV/WMA songs stored on your Pocket PC device. It features a file browser, full skin support, smart shuffle and repeat modes, a 10-band equalizer with preset support (8 included presets), built-in sleep mode, a blank screen command to prevent energy waste while playing music and many more new features.

7 ) ShootMe : is an all-in-one app. There are other apps that simulate shotguns or light sabres or even boxing, but why have different apps for each one. ShootMe! has all of those funny apps gathered in one. The application has a Free and Paid version.

8 ) Flexilis : If security is a priority for you then Flexilis is the app for you. Along with the Anti-Virus and Firewall app, Flexilis also provides a module for backup, which will let you back up your contacts and photos. You can also transfer your data to a new phone with Flexilis. The Anti-Theft Module enables you to respond when your device is lost or stolen by locating your device, sounding an alarm, or deleting your personal information remotely from the web.

9 ) G-alarm : is one of my all time favorite applications. I love my sleep and wont easily wake up with the normal alarm on my phone. This ingenious application will ask you to complete a simple game / puzzle before you can snooze/switch off the alarm. Its definitely worth the asking price of €4.99.

10 ) Cinemo & Flix : Both these apps are for finding movie showtimes and information. Cinemo works in the US and Canada. While Flix works in UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

11 ) Shopping Cart : A simple and intuitive shopping list application for Windows Mobile users. Its a finger friendly application and new features are added frequently by the developer. Requires registration.

12 ) Samsung Caxixi : Is a versatile accelerometer enabled music application for Samsung Windows Mobile devices. It plays the sounds of a variety of instruments and the sounds are triggered by shaking the phone using a variety of gestures. You can have 5 different sounds mapped to different movements at any given time. See the Youtube Video for more info.

13 ) Scramble : is a Windows Mobile App for puzzle solvers. If you love a good puzzle then you will love this game. It offers different modes and difficulty and is quite finger friendly. It should work on all screen resolutions: VGA, WVGA, QVGA and WQVGA. Check the video to see the game in action. For $0.99 this app is a must for those boring train ride to work.

Every other day, we read about plenty of new software that promise to get rid of our woes and improve our experience as a PC user. We read about such apps, download, try and then move on. However, the following apps would really make any average PC user say “Wow”. Sometimes, even the power users might be astonished and go gaga over them. Have a look:

#1. LemonScreen – Your face is your password

LemonScreen works with your webcam and uses a face recognition technology to lock down your computer immediately when you step away from your desk. You needn’t type your password again to login. It automatically makes out that you’re infront of your computer with inputs from your webcam and unlocks your computer in no time.

#2. Tunatic – Identify Song Title With Just The Audio

There’s a song playing on your local radio station but nobody is telling you what that song is. If you’ve got a microphone, place it near the audio source and pass the audio via Tunatic. It can help you identify that song. Yes, then you can really go buy that song (or rather, download)

#3. Songsmith – Got only Vocals? Add some music, baby!

If you think you can only sing and not compose music, try the Songsmith app from Microsoft that automatically adds background music from any of 30 different styles to accompany your voice. The results may not be as you mind-blowing, but you have to realise it’s a product that’s probably in its nascent stages. See a user demo.

#4. Shock Desktop 3D – Make your Desktop a 3D Playground

With this utility installed, it will seem like 2D Desktops are so passé. Shock Desktop 3D gives your desktop a very cool 3D look. Your icons actually look like cubes and you can play with them as if they were objects on a real table. Watch the video to believe. There are quite a few draw backs when you compare it with the much hyped, invite-only beta Bumptop, though.

#5. Unshredder – Reassembles Shredded Papers

If you think no one can reproduce confidential company information from papers that you shredded using a document shredder, think again. Unshredder can easily put together all these shreds (yep, after you’ve scanned all those pieces) and make them readable again.

Opera has launched Opera Turbo, a server-side optimization and compression technology that provides significant increase in browsing speeds over slow internet connections by compressing network traffic. If you have a slow internet connection, then Opera Turbo could be the browser feature to look out for.

Opera Turbo uses “Opera Web Optimization Proxy”, such that though the web sites layout and text look same, image resolution is much lower due to compression. Dynamic Web technologies such as Ajax (XmlHttpRequests) and Flash are supported, but some plugin content will load only after clicking on the empty element.

If privacy concerns are important to you, they point out that encrypted traffic does not go through compression servers, which means that on SSL sites, they let you communicate with the SSL site directly. Opera does not store any users’ private information

Download Opera 10 preview with Opera Turbo, a time-limited release which can help you test the new technology which might be a boon to developing countries affected by slow internet connections, and poor wi-fi connectivity. If you are troubled by slow internet speeds, check out Opera Turbo, or try the world’s fastest browser.

Enabling POP3 access from Hotmail allows you to easily access your emails using the e-mail software on your computer (like Thunderbird, Outlook) or mobile devices such as a Windows Mobile phone, iPhone, or BlackBerry.

Here are the email client settings you need for starting POP3

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID (full email address)
Password: Hotmail or Windows Live password
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (same POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Gmail had POP3 access for a long time which lets me read my emails easily in email clients like Thunderbird or access it from other email accounts. Now the Hotmail users rejoice with better connectivity and email on the move.

E-mail can be such a chore some days, it’s no wonder most of us don’t play around with its settings or know half the tricks it can perform. Read on for a few of our favorites…

1. Open Calendar, Contacts, or Task List in a separate window
Tired of clicking on the navigation buttons every time you want to switch between your Inbox and Calendar? Right-click on any of the Navigation buttons and choose Open in a New Window, and you can keep your Calendar or Contacts open in windows of their own. They’ll stay open while you deal with messages; simply use Alt-Tab to navigate between the windows.

2. Display multiple dates in the Calendar
You can display multiple, noncontiguous dates in the Calendar by going to the monthly calendar display in the upper left of the Calendar window and Ctrl-clicking on the dates you want to view. Each date you Ctrl-click will appear as a column in the main Calendar display. You can also display any continuous range of dates by dragging the mouse over a series of dates on the monthly calendar.

3. Customize the flag and category icons
You probably already use the flag icon in the Inbox message list to remind you of messages that you’ll need to look at in the future, or the category icon to help organize your mail. (The flag icon appears at the far right of each entry in Outlook’s message list; the category icon is the rounded square just to the left of the flag icon.) You can specify which color flag or which color category will appear by default when you click on those icons. Simply right-click on any flag or category icon, choose Set Quick Click…, and select the category or flag that you want to use as the default.

4. Use shorthand abbreviations for dates and time
Outlook’s Calendar understands both plain English text and terse abbreviations in its Start Time and End Time fields. For example, instead of typing a date, simply type “next Tue” or “next month” and the Calendar will insert the correct date. (”Next month” becomes the date one month from today.) In the time field, you can enter “now” or an abbreviated time like “4p,” which Outlook will expand to “4:00 p.m.” The same plain text shorthand also works in the Scheduling window, which means that you go to the Appointment Recurrence dialog and enter “next Thursday” as the Start time, and Outlook will specify the right date.

5. Modify Outlook’s menus
Do you want the commands you use most often to appear at the top of Outlook’s menus? Just choose Tools | Customize, then the Commands tab, and click Rearrange Commands… In the dialog that opens you can move menu items up and down in the list, delete items you don’t use, and add ones that you want. You can also save time by specifying “accelerator keys” that will launch a menu item when you type a single letter while that menu is open. To change or create an accelerator key for a menu item, click Modify Selection in the Rearrange Commands dialog, and insert an ampersand (&) immediately before the letter in the menu item that you’ve chosen to serve as the accelerator key.

6. Add holidays to your Outlook calendar
If your company observes religious holidays, or observes the same holidays honored in a head office in another country, you can add those holidays to the Outlook calendar. Use Tools | Options; on the Preferences tab, click Calendar Options…, then click Add Holidays…, and place check marks next to the national or religious holidays you want marked in your calendar.

7. Insert calendar data into your e-mail
If your e-mail account is on a Microsoft Exchange server and you’re writing to someone else who uses the same Exchange server, you can insert data from your calendar into an e-mail. In the message-editing window, go to the Message ribbon (selected by default), choose Calendar from the Include group, and specify the time period and level of detail that you want to include. This option isn’t available if your account is on a POP or IMAP server.

8. Add a contact from an e-mail message
To add the sender of an e-mail message to your Contacts, go to the message itself (not the entry in the message list), right-click on the sender’s name, and choose Add to Outlook Contacts.

9. Get rid of unwanted add-ins
Keep Outlook 2007 sleek and fast by removing add-ins that other software installs with asking your permission. Go to Tools | Trust Center… then click on Add-ins, find the Manage: item at the foot of the window, make sure that COM Add-ins is the current item, and click on Go…. From the COM Add-ins dialog you can disable an item by clearing its check box, or remove it entirely by clicking Remove.
